The Portraitist with a Twist: How I Won the Coveted Award and You Can Too!

by | Awards and Achievements, Photography Advice

Hey there, fellow photography enthusiasts! What if I told you that I’ve got a story that will make you want to grab your camera, strike a pose, and join the world of portraiture? That’s right! I, Marie, the face behind, have just been crowned the one and only “Portraitist” by the amazing Headshot Crew!

Now, you might be wondering, “What’s the big deal about this award?” Well, let me tell you, it’s like getting a Michelin star in the world of portrait photography!

The Headshot Crew introduced the Portraitist Award to encourage photographers to showcase their skills and develop their portfolios. It’s all about recognizing talented photographers and their unique voice in portrait work. And guess what? I’m one of those talented photographers!

Collage of 10 award-winning portraits from Marie's Technical and Creative Portraitist portfolios, featuring natural light, wide angle, a duo portrait, and black and white shots, with the prestigious Portraitist logo in the center.

To bag this prestigious title, I had to create not one, but TWO fantastic portfolios: a Technical Portfolio and a Creative Portfolio. Want to know how I managed to create two jaw-dropping portfolios that got me this incredible award? Buckle up, because I’m about to share the secret sauce!

The Technical Portfolio: Mastering the Art of Portraiture

This part of the challenge was all about showcasing my technical prowess in photography. I had to create a compelling portfolio with one example from each of these ten categories:

  1. Wide angle / up close (35mm or wider)
  2. Black/white
  3. One light
  4. Warm/cool
  5. Hard key
  6. Environmental
  7. Movement
  8. Natural/available light key
  9. Off camera eye line
  10. The Double

From dramatic black and white shots to the warmth of a cozy fireplace, I had to nail every category! It was like participating in a photography obstacle course, and I loved every minute of it.

The Creative Portfolio: Unleashing My Inner Visionary

This was where I let my creativity shine! I had to curate 10 of my best portrait shots that expressed my individual taste, ideas, and voice. The only rule? The Creative Portfolio had to be a cohesive body of work, and up to 5 images from my Technical Portfolio could be duplicated.

From ethereal forest scenes to edgy urban backdrops, I chose the images that best represented my unique photography style. This was my chance to put my heart and soul on display, and boy, did it pay off!

So, there you have it! My journey to becoming the Portraitist with a twist!  Now, you might be thinking, “Marie, that’s great, but how can I win this prestigious award too?” Well, my friend, it’s all about honing your skills, embracing your creativity, and most importantly, never giving up!

So, grab your camera, start snapping those portraits, and who knows? Maybe you’ll be the next big Portraitist on the Headshot Crew!

Remember, the world is your canvas, and your camera is the paintbrush. Let’s create some masterpieces together!

Keep on shooting, and see you in the next blog post!

Yours in Photography, Marie
