Best Locations for Outdoor Headshots in Phoenix
Thinking about an outdoor headshot instead of a studio session? Phoenix has plenty of options: from urban backdrops to desert landscapes. But not every pretty spot makes a good headshot location.
Here's what to consider, plus some of my favorite spots around the Valley.
What Makes a Good Outdoor Headshot Location?
Before you pick a location based on scenery alone, think about the practical stuff:
Background should support your brand, not distract from it. Think about what you want your headshot to say about you:
- Desert landscape: Unmistakably Arizona. Great if your brand is rooted in the Southwest or you want that rugged, authentic feel.
- Nature and greenery: Approachable, fresh, wellness-oriented.
- Cityscape: Modern, forward-thinking, tech-savvy.
- Old West architecture: Warm, established, community-focused. Think downtown Scottsdale or historic Gilbert.
Permits and access. Some locations require photography permits, especially for commercial use. Always check before booking.
Lighting matters more than the view. The most beautiful location in Phoenix won't help if you're squinting into the sun or standing in harsh shadows. Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) is ideal. Midday Arizona sun is brutal on faces.
Top Outdoor Headshot Locations in Phoenix
Downtown Phoenix
The murals in Roosevelt Row add color and personality without overwhelming the frame. The area around CityScape and the Phoenix Convention Center offers clean urban lines for a modern corporate feel.
Best for: Creative professionals, entrepreneurs, personal branding
Papago Park
Red rock formations and desert plants give you that Arizona look without driving far from the city. The Hole-in-the-Rock area is iconic, but it gets crowded. Aim for early morning.
Best for: Lifestyle brands, outdoor industry, real estate professionals
Scottsdale Waterfront
Clean, modern architecture along the Arizona Canal. The bridges and walkways provide structure without clutter.
Best for: Business professionals, executives, financial services
Old Town Scottsdale
Western charm meets upscale Arizona. Adobe walls, courtyards, and galleries create warm, textured backgrounds.
Best for: Realtors, hospitality, local business owners
Tempe Town Lake
Water reflections and city views. The paths along the lake offer variety: urban on one side, open sky on the other.
Best for: Corporate headshots, LinkedIn profiles
Why I Still Recommend Studio Headshots
Outdoor sessions can be beautiful, but they come with variables: weather, crowds, lighting changes, permits. In my Gilbert studio, I control everything — lighting, background, temperature — so we can focus entirely on getting your best expression.
